As part of the EUWES project, four essential training sessions were held by project partner ESF in November 2024, focusing on integrating a gender perspective into the energy sector. These sessions targeted both women currently working in the energy industry and university students pursuing energy-related degree.
First Training: How Can We Take into Account Diversity in the Construction of Knowledge and Scientific and Technical Discourse?
On November 9, 2024, members of the green energy cooperative Som Energia gathered in Terrassa for an insightful session titled “How Can We Take into Account Diversity in the Construction of Knowledge and Scientific Discourse?”.
Co-hosted by ESF and Science Queers, the training emphasized the inclusion of women, LGTBIQA+, and other underrepresented groups in energy-related discussions. The session featured a one-hour presentation and a dynamic group activity, where participants explored barriers to diverse participation in the energy transition. The event sparked meaningful dialogues, reaffirming the importance of equity in scientific and technical discourse.
Second Training: Gender and Energy Workshop
The Barcelona School of Industrial Engineering held two interactive workshops in November 2024, attracting 14 students on November 7 and 40 students on November 22. These sessions, part of the EUWES project, featured dynamic group activities addressing gender disparities in the energy sector. Topics included barriers women face during the energy transition and tools for fostering equity. Students expressed newfound awareness and knowledge, emphasizing the importance of integrating a feminist perspective into engineering and technological innovations.
Third Training: Gender and Energy Workshop
On November 19, 2024, the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) brought together 22 first-year engineering students for an engaging workshop on energy and gender. Using the EUWES project handbook, students collaborated on actionable ideas like equitable professions for a just transition and overcoming obstacles in the energy model. The interactive format inspired critical reflections and practical takeaways, contributing to the cultivation of gender-sensitive engineering practices among emerging talent.
Fourth Training: Gender and Energy Workshop
The final training in the series took place on November 22nd, 2024, at ETSEIB-UPC in Barcelona, targeting students from the Technological Innovation subject. A total of 40 students participated, with 22 women, 1 agender, and 13 men attending. This session, lasting two hours, used the same format as the previous workshops, including collective dialogues and group work.
Last three training sessions were for key beneficiaries and the flow of training. The workshop began with a 10-minute introduction that set the stage for two collective dialogues: ‘The Energy That Moves the World’ and ‘How the Energy Model Affects Women.’ These discussions aimed to challenge participants’ understanding of energy and its gendered impacts. Following the dialogues, students worked in groups, tackling topics such as ‘The Energy Ecotopia,’ ‘Professions for a Just Ecosocial Transition,’ and ‘Obstacles Women Face in the Energy Transition.’ Group activities included organizing ideas, discussing the topics, and synthesizing their findings. The session concluded with a 25-minute wrap-up, during which participants shared insights and reflections. Feedback showed that most attendees felt they had gained valuable knowledge from the training.
