On Friday, October 25, 2024, a training session titled Gender Mainstreaming in the Design and Implementation of Energy Policies was held online.
Organized by the Focus Association for Sustainable Development, the event attracted energy policy and decision-makers from national level as well as representatives of municipalities who are working on energy issues. The aim of the training was to raise awareness about the importance of integrating gender perspectives into energy policies, a necessary step towards a just green transition and greater social equity.
Participants (coincidentally all women) were introduced to the current state of gender equality in the energy sector, where women are underrepresented, particularly in technical and leadership roles. It was highlighted that women often bear a greater burden of energy poverty and tend to make more sustainable decisions, yet their role in the energy sector remains underrecognized. A methodology for analyzing energy policies through a gender lens was presented, emphasizing the development of gender-sensitive indicators and the use of gender-disaggregated data.
Special attention was given to practical tools for implementing gender equality principles. These included gender-responsive budgeting and the creation of indicators to assess the impact of energy policies on various groups. Through case studies and interactive discussions, participants explored the importance of balanced gender representation in energy processes, which can drive innovation, economic growth, and social justice.
The event concluded with a discussion on future steps. Participants agreed that successful gender mainstreaming requires closer collaboration among stakeholders, improved gender-disaggregated data systems, and efforts to dismantle stereotypes about the energy sector being exclusively technical.
The training underscored that recognizing and addressing gender equality issues is vital for an effective, fair, and sustainable energy transition. The organizers hope that the tools and knowledge shared will support participants in their ongoing work.
